Recently Rosemount High School has lost one of it’s longtime staff Gerald “Jerry” O’Meara. Mr. O’Meara passed peacefully in his home on December 2nd; he was 85.
Mr. O’Meara, was a counselor at Rosemount High School for 30 years and was so committed to his students and school he continued as a substitute for 20 more years. He had seen at least 50 different graduating classes and has helped hundreds of students while he was a staff member at Rosemount High School.
Outside of his school life he participated in The Lions Club and The American Legion. His hobbies included golf, playing cards. In the guestbook of his obituary, many people ranging from friends and family to community members from Rosemount High School remembered and commented on their memories of his life. One such memory is from Rosemount High School vice principal, Drew Storley: “ I enjoyed seeing Jerry in the halls of RHS every time he would sub. Always a smile, a kind greeting, and enjoyable conversation! Kids loved having Mr. O’Meara for a sub, as he was a lovable grandparent like figure who showed each and every one of them the same kindness. There are many current and former students who knew him in this context and are truly very saddened to learn of Jerry’s passing. What a wonderful testament to a gentle spirit!”
We at the Irish Gazette and the students of RHS, past and present, want to thank Mr. O’Meara for his time, energy, and spirit. You will be missed.
