“Fiction can show you a different world. It can take you somewhere you’ve never been. Once you’ve visited other worlds, like those who ate fairy fruit, you can never be entirely content with the world that you grew up in” (Neil Gaiman). This quote is exactly how it can feel to be so invested in a show or movie’s world. I have written about three phenomenal shows that fully capture the feeling of being so immersed in another world just to escape.
Gilmore Girls, A Walk Through the Beauties of Small Town Living
Gilmore Girls is a cozy show about a teenage girl named Rory, and her mom, Lorelei, as it follows them and their lives in a small town. The show focuses on Rory navigating through her new private school, Chilton. Lorelei is introduced as she manages a new job and tries to raise her teenage daughter on her own. Together, they both make new friends and rediscover old enemies as well as some new ones.
One of the main reasons why I love this show is because I love how it shows the close knit and sweet relationship between Rory, Lorelei, and the people of Stars Hollow.
I love it because it really makes the show feel more cozy and welcoming because of how well the town gets along with each other.
It is also really nice how they did make everyone in Stars Hollow close because I feel like it gave the viewers a sense of belonging as if they were a part of the Stars Hollow family too. Just from seeing up close and personal what was happening in the town.
Another reason why I love this show is because of Lorelei’s humor and sarcasm she uses in the show.
There have been countless times where I have burst out into tears laughing because of some of the things she says. I also think it makes her more relatable because it shows that not everyone talks proper, fancy, and sophisticated.
There is nothing wrong with talking like that. I just like to see representations of not talking and or acting like that.
The acting on this show is another thing that I think was done really well. Each actor put in lots of effort as well as emotion and I could really feel it from my screen.
There aren’t many things that I disliked about this show except for two crucial things, the new writers and changing Rory’s character when she goes to Yale.
Around season five, the show hired new writers to take over for the previous writers. The new writers wrote scripts for the next two seasons.
I’m not saying anything against the writers themselves, I just personally think that what they did for the next few seasons of Gilmore Girls wasn’t as good as it could have been.
Almost all of Rory’s character was changed when she went to Yale because she started caring less about what she previously cared about and she did things that she would never have done before.
Overall, I think this is an amazing TV show that I would definitely recommend. It has beautiful friendships and characters that you will want to root for until the very end. It is also incredibly funny and I caught myself bursting out laughing at certain parts. Gilmore Girls is also what I would consider a cozy show, like I mentioned before, and it has perfect fall vibes.
One Tree Hill, Navigating the Ups and Downs of Friends and Family
One Tree Hill is about two half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott as they fight it out on the basketball courts and in finding their places in their small town of Tree Hill, North Carolina. It follows Lucas, Nathan, and their friends and family as they navigate their places in Tree Hill high school as well as the outside world. One Tree Hill is filled with drama that will have you at the edge of your seat, romances that will make you swoon, and friendships that will make you both laugh and cry.
A reason why this show is so good is because of the plot twists that almost every episode has at the end.
These plot twists are so compelling that I feel like I have to stay up until 3 a.m. finishing the episodes.
This also makes the show really good because sometimes now it’s harder to get into a show and stick with it because of how much social media is affecting our attention spans. I am guilty of this too because my attention span is in the negatives.
Another positive thing about this show is the actors and actresses are really phenomenal and they do a great job at showcasing all of the emotions the characters feel in the show.
Throughout the show I can really feel the emotion that the actors are trying to showcase for their characters.
During the more stressful or intense episodes I can feel that through the screen. Just by the look on the actors faces and the tone of their words I can feel myself getting more stressed and excited.
This happens for all of the episodes: the happy ones, sad ones, intense and stressful ones, and so on. For all of those I can just feel the emotions through my own screen.
Similar to Gilmore Girls, I don’t have many bad things to say about this show aside from a few minor things.
The first thing I wasn’t a huge fan of in this show was how they changed Lucas’ character when he started dating Brooke.
I really don’t think it was like the early episodes Lucas to cheat on Brooke with Peyton.
Lucas was happy with Brooke and I think he really loved and cared about her which is why I don’t understand why he would have cheated on her. Especially with her best friend which was really bad on Peyton’s part.
I absolutely despise the cheating trope in anything so I was disappointed that this show had it.
But other than those minor things I really enjoyed One Tree Hill.
Overall, I really enjoy this TV show and I would definitely recommend it. It is funny, romantic, and has lots of drama and plot twists. It is immensely entertaining and it definitely captures your attention. One Tree Hill is definitely a show that I will rewatch over and over because I really enjoyed it. While it does have its downsides, I think it is still an amazing show and I would definitely recommend it.
Friends, The Comedic Life of City Living
Friends is a comedic show about six friends who meet each other in the big Apple, aka New York. It follows Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Joey, Rachel, and Ross as they fall in love, go through heartbreak, and just overall how they navigate through their individual lives.
One of the main reasons why I love this show is because of the found family the main six characters made with each other.
I love how the main six are all so close with each other and how much they all care about each other.
Chandler and Joey’s friendship and Monica and Rachel’s friendship are two of my most favorite friendships ever. Both of these duos work so well together and they both make me laugh hysterically.
All of the main six help each other whenever they need it and they’re just always there for each other, offering support which I absolutely love.
This show is also the kind of show that you could watch when you’re sad and I feel like it could instantly make you feel better.
Another thing is I love how they made all of the main six characters so different yet make them work so well together as friends.
They all have such different personalities so it would be hard to imagine them getting along as well as they did in the show, but I think their dynamic really worked very well.
Much like the other two shows, I have very few negative arguments except for one main thing.
The first thing is I wish they did more with Joey’s character towards the end of the show and gave him a love interest.
Joey’s character was portrayed as the “playboy” character so he never really dated anyone long term but he had lots of short term girlfriends.
I understand why the writers decided to not give him a love interest because it would taint the “playboy” image they had him painted as but Joey grew a lot during the show and he became a significantly better person compared to the first few episodes.
With how much growth he showed, I think giving him a love interest would have been really great to show just how much he had grown.
Overall, I absolutely adore this TV show. It is by far my favorite one that I have ever watched and I rewatch it all the time. I love the comedy, how close all six of them are with each other, and just the overall dynamic of the show. Friends is my comfort show that I rewatch over and over, it is a show that I think everyone should watch at least once in their life. The six main characters Monica, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel, and Ross, create a sense of family for the viewer to be a part of that I adore and think everyone deserves to feel.
